| Partnership Leads to Homeownership for Two B&R Grads |
|
Two graduates of Boaz & Ruth will soon purchase a new home in the Highland Park neighborhood. The opportunity for first-time homebuyers Kelvin & Geraldine Coley was made possible through a partnership between Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity, Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority, the University of Richmond’s Center for Civic Engagement and Boaz & Ruth. Each partner has brought something important to the project: Richmond Metropolitan Habitat for Humanity has led construction; Richmond Redevelopment and Housing Authority contributed the land; the University of Richmond has funded construction and invited both students and faculty to volunteer; and Boaz & Ruth has helped coordinate the effort. The noteworthy collaboration was celebrated at a home dedication ceremony in April.
“The partnership is an historic first “says Leisha LaRiviere, Richmond Habitat’s Executive Director. “Land for the home was purchased from RRHA for only $1, enabling Richmond Habitat to spend more money on architectural elements to create a neighborly design that blends beautifully into the Highland Park neighborhood. In addition, dollars that would have been spent on land can instead be spent on infrastructure like water and sewer required for the home. The result is a more attractive design, as well as a more affordable home for our new homeowner family. This unique collaboration is a win-win all around. The Coley family has been given the opportunity at a new life in a new home, and a community has been revitalized. It doesn’t get much better than that.”
The Coleys, with the help of friends and family members, have been volunteering two days a week on the home’s construction to fulfill their commitment of 350 hours of sweat equity. Under the Habitat for Humanity model, they will purchase the house with a minimal down payment and a no-interest mortgage. The home should be ready for move-in early this summer. The Coleys will live there with their son, Milton and their nephew, Charles. The house is located near Boaz & Ruth’s main facility where Kelvin is employed with B&R’s Mountain Movers and Geraldine is the Harvest Store Leader and Administrative Assistant. |
